Topic                           : Whole Numbers – Subtraction with the range of 10000
Learning objectives     : At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able                                                          to:
                                   (a) Understand subtract as “take away” or “different” between                                            two groups of objects.
Learning outcomes     : 1. Subtract two numbers up to 4-digits without regrouping.
                                    2. Subtract two numbers up to 4-digits with regrouping.
Prior knowledge          : 1. Pupils know how to subtract numbers up to 3-digits without                                         regrouping.
                                    2. Pupils know how to subtract numbers up to 3-digits with                                              regrouping.

5.    Can you make a guess?
6.    I take away one sweet. How many sweets were left?
7.    Do you know what I am going to teach today?
1.    Teacher greets the pupils and so do the pupils.
2.    Teacher asks question and pupils reply.
3.    Teacher takes out one packet of sweets.
4.    Teacher asks question and pupils reply.
5.    Teacher takes out 1 sweet from the packet.
6.    Pupils are asked how many sweets are left.
7.    Teacher takes away 2 sweets.
8.    Pupils are asked how many sweets are left.
9.    Teacher relates the conversation to the today’s topic.

Lesson Development

Step 1

(±15 minutes)
Subtraction within the range of 10000 without regrouping.
 Teacher asks questions:
1. Do you know how to read this words?
2. Let’s read together loudly.

eg.
Take away 拿掉
Subtract
Different 相差
How many left? 还剩多少?

1.    Teacher shows vocabulary cards.
2.    Teacher pastes the cards on the white board.
3.    Teacher reads out the words.
4.    Pupils read out the words.
5.    Teacher explains the words in Chinese.
6.    Teacher forms the Mathematical sentence in words.
7.    Teacher explain how to change the Mathematical sentences into number by using the sign of “-”.
8.    From the vertical form, teacher teaches the pupils to write in horizontal form.
9.    All pupils volunteer to come out and do 6 questions on the white board.
10.  Teacher acess their work.

Subtraction within the range of 10000 with regrouping.

1.    Teacher shows another set of number cards.
2.    Teacher forms a question in vertical form.
3.    Teacher explains how to subtract the two groups of numbers with regrouping.
4.    Teacher does two example.
5.    All pupils come out and do the examples on the white board.

Consolidation Activity

eg:
Group 1-  6 questions
Group 2- 10 questions
Group 3- 15 questions
1.    The pupils are divided into 3 groups.
2.    Teacher distributes worksheet to the pupils.
3.    Teacher explains how to do the worksheet.
4.    Pupils do the worksheet under the guidance of teacher.
5.    Discussion will be done after pupils have completed the worksheet.

Teacher asks questions:

3. See clearly and understand the question before you do.
1.    Pupils are asked what they have learn.
2.    Teacher access pupils with exercises.
3.    Pupils need to submit the task by tomorrow.

Refleksi :
       For step 2, subtraction with regrouping, pupil Toh Yue Qing still not really understand the concept. She only understand when I said “ If you have 2 sweets, would you be able to give me a sweet?” when I asked her this kind of questions by giving her a more concrete consept instead of numbers, she could easily solve the problem. So I think that’s the way she could really understand a concept.
